two months ago after a multimillion dollar renovation project ended. fox 5's maureen umeh has the story. >> reporter: 4 million gallons of water drained. the algae that had taken over the reflecting pool in front of the lincoln memorial mostly gone, too. >> i decided to come down and see it this week and it's been drained. >> reporter: now 65 national park service contractors and staff armed with brushes and squeegees are in the pool carefully scrubbing away the mess. >> it is beautiful. i've seen it about. it's not beautiful when it's dirt -- before. it's not beautiful when it's dirty. it's buffalo they're cleaning it up. >> reporter: the -- it's wonderful they're cleaning it up. >> reporter: the system is supposed to filter and circulate the water to keep it cleaner. carol johnson, national parks spokesperson, says it did. she said what happened was the level of ozone needed to

prevent the algae from forming wasn't calibrated correctly. >> we had to figure out exactly how much ozone to inject into the water to kill the nutrients that the algae feeds on and because we had it to low at the beginning, algae took hold. >> i used to clean pools as an engineer and i know what can happen with this. one little change and the algae is everywhere. >> reporter: it will take a few days for clean-up to be completed and then three more days for the pool to be refilled. all the work costs about $100,000, the money coming out of national park service's maintenance budget. >> we have to do this once a year. >> reporter: the renovation project included reinforcing the bottom of the pool to prevent millions of gallons from leaking out every month. it also included new l.e.d. lights and handicapped accessible walkways, but the

green project turning green wasn't in the plan. many tourists say they understand. >> i think it's money well spent. unfortunately we have these mishaps along the way. >> the national park service says the warm weather and even the derecho which upset nutrients in the bottom of the lakes and reflecting pool led to this particular problem. they say algae doubles in size every four hours. developing in fairfax county police are looking for a suspected serial fondler. he's approached women at least five times in springfield, usually from behind, grabbed them before taking off. each victim described him as a man in his 30s, 5' 8, dark eyes, neatly trimmed beard. a crime spree near the ft. totten metro station has gotten attention of a lawmaker on capitol hill, congresswoman eleanor holmes norton, who joined community leaders a walk along a footpath where several people have been robbed at gunpoint recently. fox 5's audrey barnes has that

story. >> reporter: the problem is on this footpath between galloway and gallatin and it's common none. >> people get mugged, maybe beat up -- knowledge. >> people get mugged, maybe get some lights out here. >> reporter: there be plenty of places for people to hide and watch who is coming without being spotted. now even daylight isn't a deterrent for crime here, the two most recent mugs both at gunpoint happening at 8:30 a.m., the other at 2:54 in the afternoon. after a flood of complaints about a spike in crime along the pat, congresswoman eleanor holmes norton joined ward 5 councilman kenyan mcduffie and others on a walk to see how safety can be improved here. >> we are looking into temporary lighting and other remedies of that kind. >> reporter: long term solutions are also in the works. >> trying to provide better light, having a paved surface and really trying to increase

visibility. >> reporter: for now people are urged to go around the park and stay out of the woods even during the day. audrey barnes, fox 5 news. a health alert about a rare form of meningitis that killed five people including one person in maryland and virginia. doctors say it attacks the lining of the brain and spinal cord. all the infected patients received steroid injections to treat back pain. doctors suggest the steroid was likely contaminated and say it's not contagious. >> it's very important for your listening audience to know that this meningitis is not transmissible person to person. >> you have to worry about other medications prepare by this same pharmacy. >> look out for symptoms of dizziness, fevers, nausea, severe headaches and slurred speech. university of maryland dealing with a bedbug problem. several students are reporting bedbugs in their apartments.

the complaints stem back to the beginning of the semester. exterminators have been called to the south campus commons sevens apartments. this week marks 10 years since the beginning of the sniper attacks that terrorized the d.c. area. tonight friends, family and well wishers gathered in gaithersburg to honor the victims. one by one stories were told of each. community leaders also remember the fear that plagued our area. >> parents were afraid to allow their children to do anything. we were literally held hostage to two individuals that caused so much panic to our community. >> 10 people were killed, three others hurt during the shooting spree. john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo were captured and convicted, muhammad executed and malvo serving a light sentence. it's been 68 years since

seven u.s. marines went missing in action on a training flight over the south pacific in world war ii. tonight their remains are back home buried together at arlington national cemetery. fox 5's bob barnard has the story. >> reporter: it took only one hearse, just one flag draped casket to carry the remains of seven u.s. marines missing in action since the second world war. they are 2nd lieutenant walter vincent, technical sergeant james csney, corporal wayne erickson, first lieutenant lavern lalithen, second lieutenant dwight eckston, private first class john donovan and corporal jack yeager. >> he was 12 years older than i was and was my hero as i grew up. >> reporter: jack yeager's nephew and niece among the relatives of all seven marines who have come from across the

country for this extraordinary ceremony and burial. >> they will be in a common grave here in arlington and it's a celebration and a homecoming. we've got them home. >> reporter: the marines went missing on april 22nd, 1944, when their patrol bomber crashed into a mountain on a south pacific island. remnants of the aircraft were first discovered 50 years later. members of a joint p.o.w. mia accounting command serving team spent the past 10 years excavating the crash site. >> it was a very dense jungle and jpac went in and started sifting through all the dirt, all the rubble and came up with all of the remains of the bones, coins and my uncle's wedding band. >> reporter: marilyn carried it with her today. >> people react to death in

different ways. uncle jack's mother and father took children into the home to raise them and that was kind of their reaction to the grief. >> reporter: the pentagon used dna from living relatives to positively identify the remains. marilyn claussen wrote a poem in her uncle's honor. >> now that your journey is almost through we will see you in arlington with the rest of your crew. then when i enter heaven's doors, i'll see all the loved ones i knew before. there will be a special face i see and i'll know you and you'll know me. >> reporter: at arlington national cemetery, bob barnard, fox 5 news. >> 73,000 u.s. servicemen are still missing from world war ii. coming up a true leap of s daring escape from a burning building caught on tape. >> there's a new way to make

each family member jumped out. the 17-year-old hit the awning before the concrete. just after midnight a building security camera captures these heart stopping images of a 17- year-old landing on her feet, then dropping to the ground after jumping out a window 30 feet up. >> i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: with broken toes she crawled screaming for help because her mother and four younger sisters remained on the window ledge preparing to jump. >> my leg was hurting so bad i had to crawl to the gas station. >> reporter: jerome carter heard the cries for help and opened his arms catching her younger sisters and helping break her mother's fall. >> it happened so fast we were just reaching saying let go. we got you and thank god we had them. >> reporter: mom says she and her 6-year-old are the last to jump. >> she's holding me. i got her body out the window, but i'm still inside the house and i'm telling her go ahead and fall, fall. they're going to catch you.

she didn't want to do that. so we both ended up falling out the window together. >> reporter: the family says they left a lit candle in the bathroom. they just moved in from a homeless shelter and the utilities were not turned on yet. >> i'm just so blessed. i've never been through nothing like that. that was just my first instance. it's like, you know, you all go. they're down there yelling and telling me to throw you out. they're going to catch you. i'm going to trust them and that's what i did. >> reporter: the family is staying with relatives. luckily everybody is out of the hospital and are hoping to return home soon. sharon crawley, fox news. >> wow, an amazing story, so glad they're okay. get out and enjoy tomorrow. >> yes, it will be wonderful, not so humid like today and unlike today where we had a lot of clouds in the morning, full sunshine ahead. it will be marched to get a table outside tomorrow -- hard to get a table outside tomorrow

night. live outside, no fog, no rain but cooler tonight as skies have cleared and the air is a lot drier than the tropical stuff last night and early this morning. won't be much longer before we'll be saying wish we could get some tropical humidity back. we've got a frontal boundary approaching with a real cold shot of air behind it, the coldest so far this season. ahead of it it's still pretty warm and it will be tomorrow as high pressure briefly builds in to bring us a really fantastic friday. see the temperatures even now warmer than they were at 10:00, up to 73 degrees. then you go 17 miles up the road and it's 57 in gaithersburg and frederick, sick 3 dulles, 61 manassas -- 63 dulles, 61 annapolis. it's not that chilly in many areas, but out in the suburbs we will see our temperatures head down into the 50s and, of course, as we look across the country here is our frontal boundary. look at the warm air ahead of

it looking at current temperatures and the chill behind it, denver 38 degrees. we know there's been a little snow in the rockies this year. they may get an inch or 2 of snow toe. you may see some -- tomorrow. you may see some fun pictures on the denver snow. there will be a few showers with this frontal boundary saturday afternoon i'd say late in the day saturday. i couldn't think it will wreck your saturday. once the front goes through, i think you'll notice the wind first and foremost. saturday night you'll begin to notice the chill as temperatures get a little bit down to the low 50s. what about sun? there will be a chance for showers -- sunday? there will be a chance for showers sunday. the front gets here and a back little disturbance rides along the front to bring a few showers into town and maybe for parts of that redskins game at 1:00 sunday. saturday 76, not bad, but a few showers coming through in the afternoon. sunday we'll describe as cool, chilly maybe even at 59 degrees and on the wet side.

let's show you the futurecast so you of get an idea of the timing for the showers, nothing tomorrow. we'll pause this saturday morning about 8:00. there could be some snow in the mountains here for west virginia and maryland over the weekend as this cooler air comes into town, not so much saturday, but maybe sunday. look what happens saturday afternoon about 3:00 right along the 95 corridor looks like these showers try to blossom out and keep moving. so your saturday evening should be dry with the exception of the delmarva. the skies clear out and it gets gusty. watch what happens sunday morning as early as 8:00. we start seeing some of these showers come with the wave of low pressure that rides along the boundary. if we're lucky, it's gone by the time the redskins game ends. it could be a couple showers the first part of the game and sunday afternoon sun is back by 5:00 or so for the rest of us as showers depart. it's not an dale rain but just some showers -- day rain but just some showers sunday and i would say early morning to
